THE TREEOur tree is a hoary old sycamore, around 80 years old. Sycamores are not loved much in these isles as they can be invasive and are consequently dismissed as weeds. This is a bit unfair as they can be striking trees and play their part in cleaning the air, storing carbon and enhancing biodiversity (they are particularly appreciated by dormice and bluetits). Sycamore - Acer pseudoplatanus - is a maple, unrelated to the similar plane tree (hence the pseudo). It was introduced into this country in the fifteenth or sixteenth century from central Europe. The most famous sycamore is the Martyr's Tree at Tolpuddle in Dorest under which the first agricultural trade union was formed in 1830, an act of sedition that led to the members of the union being deported to Australia. Our tree may not be the most beautiful in London, but it is our inspiration (see vision). It has taken a good deal of abuse during the build but happily is flourishing. The house feels as though it has risen beside the tree to enfold it in a gentle embrace. Long may this intimate relationship continue.
